Union Biometrica Congratulates Nobel Prize Winners Dr. Victor Ambros and Dr. Gary Ruvkun!

Holliston, MA (October 8, 2024) - Congratulations to Dr. Victor Ambros and Dr. Gary Ruvkun on being awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine! Their discovery shows that microRNAs broadly regulate gene activity to control development and function. Their discovery revealed an entirely new method to gene regulation that appears to be used by all multicellular life. Working in the 1980s, Ambros and Ruvkun studied the nematode C.elegans, which contained many specialized cell types. Subsequent work, including the discovery of another microRNA in 2000, proved that there are more than a thousand genes for different microRNAs in humans. This is one more example of how research in model organisms can lead to discoveries of universal principles of biology.

Union Biometrica had the pleasure of helping to advance both of their research with the nematode C.elegans, utilizing the Union Biometrica’s COPAS instruments in the 2000s.  We congratulate them and the impact of their contributions to the scientific community.
