Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
Union Biometrica is looking for a mechanical engineer with part time responsibilities as a field service and manufacturing engineer. This position is to be a “jack of all trades” in our company. The right candidate will join a small team of high-energy people designing, manufacturing and selling sophisticated, automated instruments used in cutting-edge life-science and biomedical research such as drug discovery, toxicology and genetics research. This hands-on position will allow you to help design, test and solve problems with mechanical, electrical, optical, fluidic and software systems. You will interact with engineers, scientists, manufacturing techs and customers. You will be asked to help design new instruments, test and make improvements with our current products, and solve problems with instruments in the field throughout the world. This is a full-time position based at our headquarters in Holliston, MA, just outside of Boston.
A key role is diagnosing instrument problems at customer sites and solving them. You will work with customers remotely and in-person. Travel includes customer visits for installations, support, and maintenance of our instruments. In house, you will help design new features for our existing products as well as help with new product development. You will assist the manufacturing team with production “i.e. bringing new instruments online.”
Good communication skills with people with a variety of backgrounds and technical skills is necessary. Our instruments are used throughout the world in academic and commercial settings performing many different scientific applications.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for a mechanical engineer that brings:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with good hands-on technical skills.
- Knowledgeable in 3D design, 3D Printing, prototyping and testing.
- Good problem-solving and debugging skills that may involve mechanical, optical, software or electrical components.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- At ease with designing new instruments, solving manufacturing issue, and diagnosing customer problems who use our instruments.
- Responsive and good at guiding customers working through problems over the phone and on Zoom.
- Domestic and occasional international travel required. Travel amounts vary from 0-50% of your time each month but typically average 25%.
We are a small company so everybody “wears multiple hats” and is highly visible. In this position you will be a part of a small team working directly for the director of engineering. Testing, debugging, documenting and solving is all part of this versatile job.

We are a small team of highly motivated scientists & engineers best known for our specialty flow cytometers for high-speed analysis and sorting of objects (e.g. cell clusters, C. elegans, zebrafish, mosquitoes) which are too large or fragile for traditional flow cytometers.
